The International Student Ministry gives us the chance to assist international students attending classes at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and Avila. Whether you pick a new arrival up at the airport, provide housing until more permanent arrangements are established, or take students shopping, each opportunity allows you to establish a true friendship with students far from home.

A training session is provided once each year to help train new ministry team members in cross-cultural issues, responsibilities, and things that should/should not be done when relating to students. This ministry is for those willing to spend time developing a solid relationship with individuals, which provides opportunities to share the gospel when the students are ready to hear (rather than when we are ready to share). The following is a list of opportunities throughout the year to interact with international students. The ISM Team meets for lunch regularly; students are also welcome at these meetings.

  • Airport pickup
  • Provide housing until students are able to find their own apartment, their dorm room becomes available, etc. This is typically between two days and two weeks.
  • Conversational English classes. These classes meet bi-weekly; they are not held during the summer months.
  • Walmart shopping trips. These trips occur bi-weekly.
  • Special local events. Past events include Union Station, the Truman Presidential Library, and Old Missouri Town.
  • Out of town trips. Past trips include Omaha, Nebraska and St. Louis, Missouri.
